Connect Spotify to your Samsung account to easily log in and play across all your Samsung devices. Samsung Electronics today announced a partnership with Spotify that will make it the first television manufacturer to bring the music service to the TV via Samsung Smart TVs, Blu-ray players, and home theater systems later this year.
Instant access to a library of more than 18 million songs will soon be available in Europe, where users can download the new app onto their Internet-connected device and log on for instant access to new music and their own playlists.
'Great music demands great sound quality,' Dan Sanders, director of content services for Samsung Electronics Europe, said in a statement. 'With the new Spotify app, people no longer need to fuss about connecting cables from their laptop or tablet to Hi-Fi equipment.'
The new home theater application fits seamlessly with what is the heart of most people's home entertainment experience — their TV, Spotify's global head of hardware partnerships, Pascal de Mul, said in a statement.
'It's our dream to make all the world's music available instantly to everyone, everywhere,' he said. 'And bringing our service to Samsung Smart TVs is taking us another step closer to turning this dream into reality.'
New users can experience the service free for a limited time, and it will be open to existing Spotify Premium users with a compatible Samsung Internet-capable Smart TV. The app will initially be available on the Samsung Smart TV 2012 E Series.
Meanwhile, Spotify rival Deezer, a French online music company, announced today that it will use the $130 million funding from Warner Music Group owner Access Industries to expand its service into 76 more countries — for a total of 160, though the U.S. is not one of them.
Even without U.S. customers, Deezer could provide real competition for Spotify, which originally held off launching in America while it worked out deals with U.S. labels. It rolled out as an invitation- and subscription-only service in July 2011.
Venture Beat reported that Sweden-based Spotify may be losing its footing as its financial losses continue to pile up, reaching $59 million in 2011, despite earning a reported $244 million in revenue.
